Hey Guys,
Just thought I would throw a quick up date with some pictures. It is now April and you would think all river would be full of steelhead and it would be game on. WELL...some rivers are doing well but others are fishing horrible still. This has been another weird year and nothing is on time. Typical when you have cold weather at the end of winter. Another thing I think is affecting our rivers is the low waters we have been having. We could really use some rain.
I was on the Muskegon two weeks ago. Fishing was really tough but I found one. I really had to work hard for this one.
This past week I was on the Big Manistee fishing with the winner of the silent auction for the FAST wild game dinner. I fished on Sunday for a bit in the freezing snow, rain, ect before they got up there. I fished with my long time friend on his boat. The snow was a nasty snow, ice mix and felt like knives to the face. We stuck with it and finally found a few. It definitely didn't feel like spring. Here are a few pics:

Monday Tori and Vito joined me on the river for the silent auction. The fish cooperated again and we got to do battle with 5 fish. I think Vito is hooked: :)

After success the first couple days, I was starting to think the fishing was game on. I was excited to fish another couple days. Then two days later, I was still with out a bite on my boat???? We fished hard but the fish were just not there anymore. I don't know what happened or where all the fish went. The reports were the same for most except for a few guide buddies who found one or two. It was like they completely disappeared. I heard that some of the guides did pretty decent down river towards the mouth. We still made the best out of it by hooking plenty of trout and having lunches on the boat.
While I was on the Big Man getting my butt kicked, my buddies were smoking them on the Grand River. I mean, they were really getting into them. After two days of not much action. I decided to make the drive to Grand Rapids to get on some fish, hopefully. I put in my boat in hopes that I had not missed the big push. I ended up fishing pretty hard and ended up going 1 for 2. Not exactly what I was hoping for but this was only my 3rd time on this river. If you know anything about the Grand, you know it's pretty tricky if you don't know it.
Friday morning we hit hit hard in the AM. I was thinking because of the slow fishing in the afternoon, maybe the morning bite would be on. The pressure was on and everyone was out there. We got out there and worked the runs good. We fished hard but very few fish were caught. I think a bunch of them went over the dam. Just proves that you should not wait for a fishing report to be good before the make the decision to go. If you want to go steelhead fishing, you should just go whether the fishing is good or not because you never know when that day will be that hook 20, 30, or 100.
With that being said, the fishing should continue to improve in the North west and western rivers. From here on out there will be some fish the play with. If we continue to have this mid 50 temps I am guessing we will have a drawn out run late into the spring. However, if it quickly snaps into summer, they will come, do their thing and it will be over real quick. So get out while you can have a great time on the river.
