Local Winter Fishing Opportunities

Hey everyone. I know old man winter finally set in this week around town, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up that the fishing is still going strong if you feel like braving the cold. I've been fishing riverside park and river bends park pretty consistently and doing fairly well each time out. The fish are pretty sluggish this time of year so "Low and Slow" has been the preferred presentation.

I've been running nymphs from size 12-20 through the holes and picking up a few fish each time. For bait I would use wax worms under a float this time of year. The key so to give the fish ample time to see your bait. In terms of lures, unless we get a solid weather spike I would use anything small you can keep deep and move slowly. I would almost position yourself to back troll through a hole letting small amounts of line out and working your lures from top to bottom.

In terms of best days I like to use the 2-10 rule. 2 days of high temps 10 degrees higher then the previous 2 day lows. For example it's 14 degrees outside right now and 2 days from now it will be 24 degrees.  Also any time where you have long periods below freezing and get warm sunny day above freezing with low pressure coming in on the back end of that... it's time to get the rods out. Saturday afternoon after the sun and temps have warmed the river will be REALLY good. These fish have to eat and they they know when weather is coming in. They will have their feed bags on.

Point is, bundle up and get outside. There is plenty of fun to be had.
