Food Smokers - Upright or barrel types?

I've been thinking about getting a smoker and I'm wondering what any smoker experts have to say about either. I like the upright (looks like a small fridge) because of the small footprint. Also, please share any of your favorite recipes for smoking or techniques. I've never smoked other than using a box smoker on my grill. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks.

  • Dave, that is the exact smoker that was recommended to me. In fact, the guy who showed me the smoker went out and purchased second smoker to use for parties. He said I could only get it at Sam's Club. I want to find an equivalent version at Bass Pro since I have some gift cards to use from Father's Day :)
  • HEY NOW! I JUST BOUGHT THE MOST AUSOME SMOKER. ITS ELECTRIC LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THOSE MINI FRIDGES THE KIDS TAKE TO COLLEGE. IT HAS 4 RACKS ALL DIGITAL TEMP CONTROL AND TIMER, LIGHT AND MEAT PROBE CONNECTED TO THE DIGITAL READ OUT. IT HOLDS A LOT OF MEAT I SMOKED ABOUT 15 LBS OF VENISON LAST NIGHT. I PLUGGED IT IN THREW IN THE WOOD SET THE TIMER AND TEMP WENT TO BED WOKE UP IT WAS PERFECT. VERY USER FRIENDLY VERY CONSISTANT. $289.00 SAMS CLUB
  • Chris I'm just reading this now...sorry if it's too late. I have used both - charcole and gas smokers. Depending on what your smoking and how much I would suggest you start with a Brinkman style barrel / charcole smoker. I asked for and got a gas / fridge style smokers as a gift but my jerky was better on the Brinkman. If your smoking larger items like sausage (that need to hang)or more quantity then go for a fridge style. There is something about charcole that makes things taste better in my opinion. Also it's less expensive.

  • OK, I'm going to try this again but I am serious about using a number of gift cards I've accumulated to get a smoker and would love to gain insights and feedback from the guys that use them. From the talks I've had so far I'm leaning towards an upright, electric (because it heats consistently unlike gas), but it needs to be a smoker available at Bass Pro because all the gift cards I have are from there. Thanks for any input or advice.
  • Dave, that stove top smoker looks awesome. How do I keep my smoke alarm from going off? Do you have one and do you like it?
