Thomas Lincoln Hellman – Loving Son, Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather, Godfather, and Friend

Tom Hellman was a man full of life with a giant heart. Following the example of Jesus Christ, his Savior and Lord, he never missed an opportunity to help anyone in need. Tom never met a moment in his life that could not be infused with excitement. Whether it was playing with his goddaughter, dressing up with his wife for a big party, volunteering extensively at his church, meeting his granddaughter for the first time, cleaning his guns, sitting down to dinner with his family, spurring his children on to great things, getting lost in the woods, driving too fast, or studying the Bible with his closest friends; he never let a moment go to waste. Tom meant so much to so many people and his larger than life personality will be forever missed.

Tom was born on March 15, 1957 in Saginaw, Michigan. He grew up quicker than most and graduated from Grand Blanc High School. He met Melissa Mengel at a wedding in suburban Chicago only a few years later. She lived in New Jersey and he in Michigan, but they made it work! Melissa Mengel became Melissa Hellman on May 8, 1982, one of the proudest days of Tom's life. Two more of his proudest days were when he became the father of Kristen (Craig Doescher) in May of 1985 and later Philip (Chelsea) in July of 1987. He cherished his family and beamed with pride every chance he got to talk about his wife and children.

A man of many talents, Tom lived more life in his 58 years than most do in 90. In addition to his love for his family Tom worked across of variety of industries but was most passionate about improving things. He saw opportunities for improvement in everything. He was also an avid boater, hunter, collector, car trader, and Ace Hardware shopper.

Perhaps his proudest moment came on August 22, 2015 when he became the grandfather to Rory (Doescher). He absolutely loved children and especially Rory and his goddaughter, Lucy (Johnson).

Tom was husband to Melissa and son to Helen (Hellman) and the late C. David (Hellman). He was father to Kristen and Philip, and Craig and Chelsea (by marriage). He was brother to Susan (Conkright), Nancy, David, Joann (Cullip), Kimberley (Cadieux), Deborah (Ward), and Jason (Chenett). He was grandfather to Rory, godfather to Lucy, and a friend to everyone he ever met.

Tom experienced the grace and forgiveness of Jesus Christ as a young adult and it changed his life forever. As a founding member of Kensington Church, he dedicated his life to serving Jesus. In particular, he was passionate about Kensington's Celebrate Recovery and Marriage Mentorship ministries.

Family will receive friends Thursday 3-8 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home (Price Chapel), 3725 Rochester Road (between Big Beaver and Wattles), Troy. 248-689-0700.

Funeral Service Friday 11 a.m. at Kensington Community Church, 1825 E. Square Lake Road, Troy 48085. Visitation at church begins at 10 a.m.
