My family is planning a trip to the boundary waters area in Minnesota/Canada for the 1st week in August.  I have two specific requests.  #1  What GPS system shoud I get?  #2  What fishing gear and tackle should I get for two adults and two kids 7 and 10 yrs. old?

Is it possible for a fat guy to paddle a canoe into the wind?

  • Kurt, We are really excited. I am horrible in a canoe. My wife insists on taking the back of the canoe. Checkout the website of the company that we are renting from. http://www.seagulloutfitters.com/default.htm

Hi Steve, I've been thinking about a boundary waters trip myself. I talked to a guide service at a fishing show the last couple years in Novi. Here's a link to there web page. http://www.gowildernessjourney.com/ They have some info about fishing and what you may need. Hope this helps, good luck and have fun. Kurt

  • flatback w/10hp works good.
  • Steve,

For the Boundary Waters trip (congrats by the way), here are a few things to consider with regards to fishing. By that time of the year, the fish will be in deeper waters. Will you be trolling off the canoe or be fishing off the canoe? I have spinning gear that you and your kids can borrow if needed, during the August month.

If you want to buy equipment, here are my suggestions:
    * Medium Light Spinning Rods, 6-7' lengths, 2 piece (since you will be traveling by SUV there)
    * Spincast Reels, that will hold 6-10 lb mono line
    * Lures: best to buy them on sale at Bass Pro - roostertails, spoons and a couple of jigs; also some hooks when you want to use live minnows and worms.

This fat guy can go upwind with a canoe - it might take a while...but I get there!
  • Steve, my buddies paddled a great dane in the their canoe through Boundary Waters for a week, you will be able to get through there easy. I would rent the fishing gear there. The Delorme PN-40 is pretty sweet. Aren't you going with guys that are ex-special forces? They should be loaded with gear, gps's, etc.
