Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program offers turkey hunt workshop in Tuscola County

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources’ Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is offering a Beyond BOW Turkey Hunt workshop for women in the Cass City area.

The program, scheduled for the weekend of May 12-13, is for girls and women over the age of 10 who would like to learn more about wild turkeys and hunting for them.

The workshop starts at 12:45 p.m. Friday, May 12, with check in.https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/MIDNR/2017/03/1259473/turkey_original.jpg" alt="A Michigan wild turkey is shown" title="A Michigan wild turkey is shown." hspace="10" vspace="10" width="350" height="233" align="left" class="CToWUd a6T"/>

Sharon Pitz, the DNR’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman coordinator, said there will be introductions and lots of turkey talk, as well as some hands-on learning before heading out to the range for some shooting and dinner.

“This is a great opportunity for women and younger girls who may have never had a chance to learn about turkey hunting, while being mentored in the sport,” Pitz said.

Participants are asked to bring dark clothing, a folding chair they can carry and a water bottle. Firearms will be provided, but workshop participants may bring their own guns, as well as archery equipment.

See registration materials for more details. Dinner and breakfast on Saturday, May 13 will be provided. Lodging is the responsibility of participants, as is lunch on Saturday, May 13.

Additional details to consider:

  • Participants must be at least 10 years of age.
  • Enrollment is limited to 10.
  • Registration deadline is May 1.
  • This is a rain-or-shine event.

There is no cost for the workshop, but participants will need to purchase a state turkey hunting license and base hunting license. This Beyond BOW event is being co-sponsored by Cabela’s and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Class information and registration materials are available online at the DNR website at: www.michigan.gov/bow.
